About black elderberry

Black elderberry – a natural remedy for immunity and beauty.
Elderberries are a powerful antiviral agent that can help combat seasonal flu. The compounds found in the plant's flowers, berries, and even leaves can inhibit the spread and replication of the flu virus while also enhancing the immune system's response to infections.

How do black elderberry’s active compounds work?

Compared to other berries, black elderberry contains nearly twice the amount of anthocyanins—one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants. A study conducted at the University of Sydney found that the biologically active compounds in elderberry juice prevented cells from being infected with a virus, inhibited the virus’s spread in already infected cells, and stimulated the release of cytokines—chemical messengers that help the immune system communicate with other cells.

The berries of black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) are rich in antioxidants, which combat free radicals in our bodies—molecules that cause disease. Due to these properties, elderberry flowers, berries, leaves, or bark can be beneficial for various ailments. It is even used to support cancer patients and as a preventive measure against cancer.

To obtain the same amount of antioxidants found in 100 g of black elderberries, one would need to consume approximately 220 g of blueberries or 1,140 g of red grapes. A study in Norway demonstrated that black elderberries alleviate flu symptoms and reduce the duration of illness by half.

Free radicals can destroy collagen cells, leading to wrinkles and accelerating the aging process. This is especially relevant in summer, as ultraviolet radiation intensifies free radical damage. By adding black elderberry syrup to water in hot weather, you can help protect your skin from premature aging.

Elderberries also contain ascorbic acid, carotene, rutin, sambucin, tannins, carboxylic acids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. The essential oils in the berries support the body’s detoxification process, while their antioxidant properties help lower cholesterol levels, improve vision, and support heart health.
